"Is it likely that any Welsh child will look up at Stanley's statue and be turned into a bigot? It will rather be a talking point and provocation. The protests in Wales and beyond surely offer a reason to build, not cancel, this statue: it will make people think. If I were a history teacher in north Wales I would be hoping the statue goes ahead, so it can get people angry about, and interested in, their history. Empire should never be forgotten. Can I suggest a compromise? Build the statue but inscribe its plinth with the last words of Conrad's imperialist anti-hero in Heart of Darkness"
